Detox Benefits of Drinking Cranberry Concentrate

For those of you who have detoxed with me over the past years (550+ of you!), you know one of the natural remedies I love is is cranberry concentrate. Cranberry concentrate is an anti-bacterial agent that not only prevents bacterial growth but can also help eliminate toxins from your body.

Cranberry concentrate for detox protects your body from different diseases while also stimulating weight loss. It’s recommended to complete 2-3 detox programs over the course of one year in order to enhance your whole body’s functioning. Due to the accumulation of toxins in our body, the colon often gets blocked. A healthy colon is considered the key to better health, and cranberry concentrate cranberry concentrate for detox can help clean out all the junk from your colon.  Yay! That’s a beautiful thing!

Cranberry concentrate elixir to detox!

Detox nutrition is essential for helping your body remove high levels of harmful toxins. Bacterial overgrowth can disturb your body’s natural cleansing process; cranberry concentrate kills the bacteria and promotes your natural cleansing methods. The manganese, potassium, vitamin A, anti-oxidants and vitamin C in cranberries also help in supporting your kidneys.

Are you suffering with?

  • Fatigue
  • Foods allergies or intolerances
  • Skin problems
  • Weight gain or inability to gain weight
  • IBS, constipation, or irregular bowel movements
  • Hampered immunity
  • Headaches or other pains
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Depression, anxiety, or constant mood swings
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Low sex drive
  • Sugar cravings

If you suffer from any of the above, the beginning of the New Year is great time to hit your body’s reset button by detoxing. Even if you aren’t experiencing any symptoms, it is recommended that everyone detox seasonally to give the body’s detox organs a break.

Regularly detoxing allows you to:

  1. Alkalize the body naturally
  2. Reduce sugar intake and eliminate cravings
  3. Improve the function of the detox organs and boost cellular health

Cranberry Concentrate Recipe

To prepare my favorite cranberry concentrate, blend together 3 tablespoons of cranberry concentrate, 1 tablespoon of barley green powder (optional), and a full glass of water. It is recommended that you drink at least 1 glass of cranberry concentrate every day for better health and we do this during detox time!

Drinking cranberry concentrate for detoxification can provide your body with a wealth of benefits that can lead you toward a healthier life and away from all these new ailments. Your body’s digestive system is sensitive to your environment, but it is also the key to good health. Take care of it with cranberry concentrate.

2017 Dirty Dozen – Is Your Produce Loaded with Pesticides?

The 2017Dirty Dozen List

Every year, EWG (the Environmental Working Group) does a fantastic job of testing fresh fruits and vegetables for pesticide residue. Their 2017 report was recently released and it revealed that nearly 70% of non organic fruits/vegetables had evidence of at least one pesticide residue.  Often times, there was evidence of many pesticides!

And my beloved conventional greens, spinach specifically, turned out to contain alarming amounts of DDT, a neurotoxic insecticide that is actually banned in the United States. Yikes!

There’s a new #1 this year on the Dirty Dozen list – strawberries.  Spinach and apples remain in the top 5.

The Clean 15 offers hope that not everything is laden with pesticides.  The conventional (non-organic) fruits and vegetables that were tested in this grouping showed the least amount of contamination.

Here are the results for 2017

EWG’s Dirty Dozen

  1. Strawberries
  2. Spinach
  3. Nectarines
  4. Apples
  5. Peaches
  6. Pears
  7. Cherries
  8. Grapes
  9. Celery
  10. Tomato
  11. Sweet Bell Peppers
  12. Potaotes

EWG’s Clean Fifteen

  1. Sweet Corn
  2. Avocados
  3. Pineapple
  4. Cabbage
  5. Onions
  6. Frozen sweet peas
  7. Papaya
  8. Asparagus
  9. Mango
  10. Eggplant
  11. Honeydew
  12. Kiwi
  13. Cantaloupe
  14. Cauliflower
  15. Grapefruit

Some sweet corn, pineapple and papaya sold in the United States may be genetically modified.  I personally ask if it’s non GMO or opt to purchase organic which, by definition, implies it cannot be genetically modified.

My family uses the EWG’s list to help manage our grocery budget.  We consume a ton of strawberries, spinach and greens in our home and I’ve been buying those organic whenever possible for a few years already.  On the other hand, I rarely buy cauliflower, asparagus or onions organic as those have been on the Clean 15 list for a few years now.

And if you can’t buy organic, don’t stress!  Don’t let this list deter you from eating fresh produce! It’s still better to wash these fruits and veggies really well and eat them as often as possible as opposed to grabbing a dinner of processed junk.

The Benefits of Bone Broth and My Simple Recipe

What are Heather Ferber, Gwyneth Paltrow, Salma Hayek, and Kobe Bryant all raving about?!

Bone broth of course!

You make it by boiling animal or fish bones until they liquefy and release minerals, gelatin and collagen. Bone broth is cooked much longer than soup to achieve this effect.

It tastes SO yummy and fills you up without adding a lot of calories.

It also helps heal your gut, detoxify your body, blasts wrinkles and calm inflammation.

You can always find some homemade bone broth in my fridge or freezer.

My basic recipe?! It’s easy!

Simple Bone Broth
Recipe Type: Soup
Author: Heather Ferber
Prep time:
Cook time:
Total time:
Serves: varies
Ingredients
  • 2 pounds of bones (chicken, turkey, or beef)
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 medium onion, roughly chopped
  • 2 carrots, roughly chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, roughly chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped in thirds
  • 1 teaspoon peppercorns
  • 1-2 teaspoons turmeric
  • 1-2 teaspoons fresh ginger
  • sea salt to taste
  • optional – additional spices and herbs such as parsley, basil, and cilantro or cabbage leaves and bay leaves
Instructions
  1. If using raw bones, place them in a greased pan and bake for 20 minutes at 350 to open up the flavor by lightly roasting.
  2. Place the roasted bones in a crock pot.
  3. Pour filtered water into crock pot to just cover the bones. Add the apple cider vinegar and allow to sit for 20 minutes. The acid water will help to extract more nutrients from the bones.
  4. Add the rough chopped carrots, celery, garlic, peppercorn to the pot.
  5. Add the turmeric, ginger and sea salt to taste.
  6. Add any additional herbs and spices you’d like.
  7. Fill with water to crock pot maximum.
  8. Bring the mix to a boil for a period of time.
  9. Reduce heat to simmer and allow to simmer for 24-48 hours.
  10. There may be impurities that form as foam if not using organic, grassfed bones. Skim those off periodically and discard.
  11. When done cooking, allow broth to cool slightly.
  12. Use a fine mesh strainer to remove all the veggies and bone pieces.
  13. When cooled more, pour into glass mason jars. Store in the fridge for 4-5 days or put in the freezer for up to 3 months. Remember to allow an inch of space at the top of your glass mason jar, for liquid expansion, if freezing.

Juicing and Detox

If you’ve followed me for awhile, you know that smoothies play an important role in my daily life.  They were perfect for me to begin my journey to taking back my health 15 years ago, and they still play a key role in my home life and raising three healthy boys.

Over the past couple years, I’ve also come to appreciate the importance of juicing as it has offered benefits for my clients with IBS, autoimmune and other absorption challenges. It’s also offered significant benefits to the hundreds of women (and some men) who have completed the Love Yourself seasonal detoxes.

Part of the reason I don’t juice regularly is that I have a terrible juicer and I have not invested the hundreds (or thousands) of dollars to get a spectacular one.   I blend nearly everyday because I have a rockstar blender (two of them actually!  A Vitamix and a Blendtec – which I won!).

Last summer my boys and I were exploring our local farmer’s market and we stumbled upon a juice booth by GetJuiced4Life.  My boys begged to try their red and green juice so we bought a couple bottles of each color.  They were a HUGE HIT!

Fast forward a few months and I’m preparing for my big Love Yourself detox group and I wanted to do something special for them – custom juices!  So I reached out to Devon Brent at GetJuiced4Life and found an amazing, driven young man who is just as passionate as I am about using food to take back your health!  His personal journey in dealing with health challenges and 25+ hospitalizations is one of frustration, education and inspiration.

Turns out he was 110% onboard to create custom juices for my detoxers!  What a blessing!  His dedication, creativity and work ethic partnered with his DELICIOUS pressed juices were the perfect bonus to add into my group program.  I love that we share a passion for educating our community about the importance of nutrition and positive lifestyle choices.DSC_0165

GetJuiced4Life prepares organic, raw, fresh, cold pressed juices in small batches that are bottled in a BPA free container.  There is over TWO POUNDS of fresh, local veggies and fruits in each bottle of juice.  WOWZA! Presently, there are two flavors available at Good Harvest Market in Waukesha – the red juice called “Vitalize” and the green juice called “Fortitude.”  Both are DELICIOUS and get the seal of approval from my kiddos.

For the Love Yourself Winter Detoxers, Devon and I teamed up to make three custom blends (one green, one red, and one orange plus a ginger gut health shot booster).  I hope to continue some custom order throughout the year.  If you’d like to get in on one of these orders, and are in the Brookfield area, just reach out to me at heather@betterhealthbyheather.com

And the Love Yourself Winter Detox has been such a HUGE SUCCESS this year that a second round will be kicking off on Thursday, March 16th – just in time to get refreshed, reenergized and ready for spring break. Check back in early March for open sign-ups!

Beat the Cold Weather Blues with a 24-hour Veggie Soup Cleanse

I can feel the hot, sandy, sunny beach calling my name “Come relax bustling mama.”  It’s getting closer to spring break (only a few days now) and I’m still feeling a little thick in my middle.  Time to do something about it!

We’ve all heard about juice cleanses over the past year, but not everyone has heard about another hot health trend for 2016 – the soup cleanse.

Soup cleanses are fantastic for long winter/cold spring months when our bodies could use a warm boost of energy. Unlike juice cleanses that contain some fruits, soup cleanses are typically lower on the glycemic scale. This soup cleanse is packed with veggies that contain fiber and nutrients to help maintain weight during stressful times. These soups are also jam-packed with immunity-boosting antioxidants.

To complete this soup cleanse, you’ll need a high-speed blender. I also recommend purchasing glass Mason jars for storage, then making all your soups in the morning so a busy day doesn’t ruin your plans.

When shopping for ingredients, choose organic whenever possible, and be sure to stock up on lots of water and herbal tea for maximum hydration.  There are five recipes below for breakfast, morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack and dinner.

If breakfast, lunch and dinner fill you until the next meal, you do not have to make a morning and afternoon snack, but you can if needed. Note: The Bone Broth recipe will take 24 hours to make, so plan to make this recipe the day before your cleanse. For an evening snack, drink herbal tea.

BREAKFAST
Creamy Coconut
Serves 2
1 large avocado
1½ cups coconut water
1 lemon, juiced
¼ cup basil leaves
2 cups peas
¼ teaspoon sea salt

Blend using a high-speed blender until smooth.

MORNING SNACK
Glowing Greens Soup
Serves 2
2 cups water or coconut water
2 small sweet potatoes, chopped
1 carrot, peeled and chopped
1 cup spinach
1 avocado
Pinch of turmeric
¼ teaspoon sea salt
Fresh basil (garnish)

Blend using a high-speed blender until smooth. Garnish with fresh basil.

LUNCH
Creamy Kale
Serves 2
1 bunch kale
1 avocado
½ cup coconut water or coconut milk
1 cup frozen or fresh peas
5 basil leaves
1 lemon, juiced
1½ teaspoon sea salt
Hemp seeds (garnish)
Dulse flakes (garnish)

Blend using a high-speed blender until smooth. Top with hemp seeds and dulse flakes.

AFTERNOON SNACK
Simple Chicken Bone Broth Soup
3-5 pounds of chicken soup bones
Water (enough to cover the bones)
1 tablespoon raw apple cider vinegar
*Note: Ask at your local butcher shop/local farmer for the chicken bones. Soup bones are usually very cheap, if not free!

MAKE YOUR STOCK. In a stock pot, add the soup bones and enough water to cover. Add apple cider vinegar. Bring to a boil, and then reduce to a simmer for 24+ hours.

STORE YOUR STOCK. After about 24 hours, strain the stock into mason jars. Set them in the fridgemto cool. Skim off the fat that rises to the top, and close tightly with a lid, or put in ice cube trays for quick use. This will keep in the fridge for a few days, or for four to six months in the freezer.

DINNER
Spiced Butternut Squash Soup
Serves 4
1 large butternut squash, peeled, seeded and roughly chopped
4 large carrots, peeled and roughly chopped
1 to 2 tablespoons of coconut oil
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon nutmeg
4 cups organic vegetable broth
1 can organic coconut milk (BPA-free can)
1 bunch parsley, chopped (garnish)

ROAST THE VEGETABLES. Heat your oven to 350°F. Take your chopped butternut squash and carrots and massage with coconut oil, cumin, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Bake on a cookie sheet for 20 to 25 minutes until tender. Remove from the oven and allow to cool.

ASSEMBLE THE SOUP. Add the vegetable broth and coconut milk to a large pot. Mix together thoroughly. Add the cooled, roasted vegetables to a high-speed blender in batches with just enough broth/coconut milk mixture to cover. Blend until smooth. Add it back to the soup pot and set it on medium heat for 3 to 5 minutes. Serve topped with chopped parsley.
